Internet Archive portal help

Here you can search the full text of the webpages saved from the Hungarian .hu domain since 1996 by the Internet Archive, as well as the image, audio, video and PDF files linked to these pages. The results can be viewed using the public Wayback Machine service, where various statistics and visualizations for a given domain can also be retrieved. (The “Summary” menu item doesn’t work currently, but the other functions do.)

Regarding the search engine, it’s important to note that it’s not as fast and doesn’t always return relevant results like Google, and there’s a lot of duplication, which is very difficult to filter out for pages with dynamically changing elements (e.g. advertisements, current weather, recommended articles or blog entries). As the Hungarian web space is huge and the archived web is much bigger due to the time dimension, you have a chance to find a specific page or topic if you write a few very typical words in the search box. Expressions and personal names with more than one word should be enclosed in quotation marks, as this will give much more accurate results. Conjugated and compound words can be searched with an asterisk after the beginning of the word. (An example of this: “Kokas Károly” ízes kép*) The more words you enter, the longer the waiting time will be, which will be further increased by changing the number of hits per page from the default 25.

A search narrowed down to a specific file type only covers the text of the link to the file, so neither the context or the content of the image, audio, or video, nor the full text of the PDF document is indexed, so you can’t find those files.

The number at the top of the results list is for reference only and changes if you step forward far enough. This is because in order to get the shortest possible response time, the search engine first looks at the most relevant set for the given words and then, as you move forward in the list, it also queries the index of less important websites, bringing the number of results closer to the real value.

If you know the exact address of the webpage or file you are looking for, you can look it up by clicking on the “URL” tab. If the given address has not been archived by the Internet Archive before, but it is under the .hu country domain and is still available on the live web, you have the option to make a copy by clicking on the “Save Page Now” button.
